The Rest of the Bargain

“Patches, I need to talk to you.  Alone.”

The look on her face was one of concern and intrigue.  Her mouth opened to object or inquire, but she closed it and shooed the apprentices out of the room.

She returned to her chair at the side of her bed.  “What is it?  Is something wrong?”

I smiled and shook my head.  “No, everything is just fine.  In fact, I want to talk about our next steps.

Patches’ eyebrow raised.  “Oh? And what would that be?”

“First, I wanted to ask you about how the last few days have gone.   What’s it like living with Dahlia again?  Are you happy?”

Glitter and sequins flowed into her eyes.  “Oh, it’s been wonderful!  Just having her happy again was more than enough, but to have her in the flesh… Thank you so much.  I don’t know how I could repay you.”

I drew a deep breath and frowned. “Actually, I know exactly how you can repay me.”

Patches face shifted to match mine. “I don’t like the sound of that.”

“I’ve decided what I want for the rest of our deal, and I don’t think you’re gonna like it.”

“Just say it.”

“I need your patches.”
